Before you register
The mandatory requirements for NROC registration
NROC, the National Registry of Coaches, is the national standard set by Sport Singapore. ActiveSG public-pool programmes and MOE-linked work usually ask for it.
This course is a first step towards it. To register as a swimming coach you need:
Lifesaving 123, Basic Sports Science and the SG-Coach courses are not part of this course; you take them separately.
- At least 18 years old (as of 1 January of that year)
- Proficient in at least four strokes: freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly
- Lifesaving 123
- Basic Sports Science (BSS)
- SG-Coach Level 1 Theory
- SG-Coach Technical Level 1
- Able to conduct first aid or CPR

Coach Jeff has been a fantastic swim coach for my son, Keita. Within a year, Keita learned front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. How to become a swimming coach in Singapore
Six steps from strong swimmer to working coach, and where this course fits in.
1. Swim all four strokes well
Teaching starts with your own strokes: freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, all swum competently.
2. Get certified to teach
An international swim-teaching certification such as SSI Swim Teacher, plus CPR and AED. This course covers both.
3. Teach real swimmers under a mentor
A certificate alone does not make you a coach; practice does. You teach 30 attachment classes with real swimmers while our coaches watch and give feedback.
4. Choose who you want to teach
Kids or adults, in private and condo lessons. ActiveSG public-pool programmes and MOE-linked work usually ask for NROC registration as well, which needs the separate courses listed above.
5. Find your students
Teach on your own, or join a swim school. Our graduates keep lifetime access to JustSwim student leads and our coaches' Facebook community.
6. Keep learning
Keep your CPR and AED current, and add the NROC courses when you want to coach at public pools or in schools.

Before you apply
Frequently asked questions about becoming a swimming coach in Singapore
Do I need coaching experience, or to be an expert swimmer?
No coaching experience is needed and you need not be a competitive swimmer, but you must swim freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly competently. The course helps you refine your own strokes.
What skills do you need to become a swimming instructor?
Swimming well is the start. Good instructors also communicate clearly, plan lessons around each student, stay organised, look after their customers and give honest feedback. You practise these in your attachment classes.
How do I become a swim coach in Singapore?
For private lessons, such as at condo pools, an international certification like SSI Swim Teacher lets you start. ActiveSG public-pool programmes and MOE-linked work usually ask for NROC registration as well. This course gets you the first and is a first step towards the second.
Can you coach swimming in Singapore without a certificate?

How long does it take to become a swimming coach in Singapore?
With this course, 3 months to your SSI certifications and in-house certification, after which you can teach private lessons. NROC registration takes longer, because it needs separate courses: Lifesaving 123, Basic Sports Science and SG-Coach.
Is the SSI React Right certification recognised?
React Right is SSI's first aid, CPR and AED course, and SSI is an international training agency. Employers and NROC set their own first aid rules, so check it meets theirs first.
What if I fail?
You can claim a refund if you attended every scheduled class, completed all the work and still did not pass within the 3 months. Claim in writing within 3 days of your result, with proof of attendance, completed assignments and failed exam results.
Fees paid to external instructors or governing bodies are not refunded, failing for reasons outside our control (such as personal circumstances) is not covered, and JustSwim has the final say on each request.
Can I start teaching straight after the course?
Once you pass your SSI assessments and the in-house attachment, you can teach private lessons, on your own or through our student-lead network. Public-pool and school work usually needs NROC as well.
Is there a separate kids or adult swimming instructor course?
No, this course covers both.
