SwimSafer Assessment: What to Expect on Test Day
How the SwimSafer Assessment Is Structured
What Assessors Are Looking For
How to Prepare for Your SwimSafer Assessment
- Attend all scheduled lessons in the weeks leading up to the assessment
- Practise your weakest skill each session, not just the techniques you are already comfortable with
- Arrive rested, hydrated, and at least 15 minutes early
- Bring your swimwear, goggles, and confirmation of your stage level
- Stay calm. Assessors account for nerves, and a steady, technically sound swimmer will always score better than a fast but panicked one.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Swimsafer Programme In Singapore
What Are The SwimSafer Stages In Singapore?
Singapore’s SwimSafer 2.0 programme has six stages: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each SwimSafer stage builds progressively on the last, covering water entry and floating at the beginner levels through to multi-stroke endurance, deep-water survival, and advanced self-rescue techniques at the Gold level.
What Happens During A SwimSafer Assessment?
A SwimSafer assessment is conducted by an independent NROC-accredited assessor. Swimmers are evaluated on the practical skills and safety knowledge required for their current stage. The assessment covers stroke technique, distance benchmarks, water survival tasks, and basic rescue awareness. Assessments are scheduled at designated test sessions, separate from regular lessons.
How Long Does SwimSafer Certification Take?
The time to achieve each SwimSafer certification depends on the individual swimmer’s pace and lesson frequency. Most children progress through one stage every two to four months with consistent weekly lessons. Swimmers attending two or more sessions per week tend to move through stages faster. JustSwim coaches provide an honest timeline at your trial lesson.
What Is The Difference Between SwimSafer Bronze, Silver, And Gold?
Bronze, Silver, and Gold are the three advanced SwimSafer stages that follow the foundational Stage 1, 2, and 3 levels. Bronze introduces deep-water safety and 100-metre multi-stroke endurance. Silver adds timed stroke benchmarks and diving technique. SwimSafer Gold, the highest certification level, requires advanced self-rescue skills including improvised flotation device creation and extended endurance swims.
How Much Are Swimsafer Test Fees?
The test fees typically range from SGD 20 to SGD 50 per level. These cover the examination cost, certification, and sometimes the provision of equipment necessary for the test. For a more accurate quotation, we recommend reaching out to JustSwim Singapore.
Is Swimsafer Mandatory In Singapore?
Yes, the Swimsafer programme is mandatory in Singapore for primary school students under the National Water Safety Council guidelines. However, some schools allow students to opt out of the program if they take private swimming lessons outside of school.
How To Get A Swimsafer Certificate In Singapore?
You can acquire a Swimsafer certificate by participating in our programme, conducted by JustSwim’s licensed swim instructors.
Can Adults Enrol In The Swimsafer Programme?

On completion of each stage, participants receive a Swimsafer 2.0 Certificate acknowledging their competency.
