What Is the Standard First Aid (SFA) Course?

The Standard First Aid (SFA) course is Singapore’s benchmark workplace first aid qualification, accredited under the WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) framework and recognised by the Ministry of Manpower. It is the certification required by the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act for all designated first aiders in Singapore workplaces.

SFA is a significant step above a basic first aid course. It covers a broader range of emergency scenarios, carries formal regulatory recognition, and qualifies you to serve as a designated first aider at your workplace, school, or sporting facility. A basic first aid course, while useful, does not satisfy MOM’s workplace first aider requirements.

The SFA qualification is accepted by private sector employers, government agencies, schools, and educational institutions as proof of certified first aid competency.

Who Should Attend?

The Standard First Aid Course is the right course for you if you fall into any of these categories:

If your employer said “get your first aid cert,” SFA is almost always what they mean. If you are not sure which certification applies to your specific role, read our guide to the types of first aid courses available in Singapore to confirm before you enrol.

  • Employees designated as workplace first aiders under a company’s Workplace Safety and Health plan
  • Teachers and school staff required to hold a valid first aid certification under MOE requirements
  • Swim coaches, sports instructors, and fitness trainers working with groups of all ages
  • Community workers and social service staff who may need to respond to medical emergencies on-site
  • Parents and caregivers who want the confidence and the credentials to act in a real emergency
  • HR and safety officers responsible for maintaining a certified first aider on-site at all times
  • Students and fresh graduates entering industries where SFA is a standard hiring requirement
