What Does the CPR and AED Course Cover?

The CPR and AED course covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique and automated external defibrillator operation for adults, children, and infants. You will learn to recognise a cardiac arrest, perform effective compressions and rescue breaths, operate an AED from switch-on to shock delivery, and coordinate a response until emergency services arrive.

Both a written component and a hands-on practical assessment on a CPR mannequin and AED trainer unit are included. You leave with an accredited CPR certification in Singapore that is valid for two years.

Course modules:

Recognising cardiac arrest

The signs that distinguish cardiac arrest from fainting or other emergencies.

CPR technique for adults

Correct hand placement, compression depth, compression rate, and rescue breath ratio.

CPR for children and infants

Adjusted technique for paediatric casualties.

AED operation

Powering on, correct pad placement, following audio and visual prompts, resuming CPR after a shock.

Coordinating with a second responder

How to share compressions and maintain quality over time.

Calling for emergency services

When to call, what to say, and how to manage the scene while waiting.

Who Should Do the CPR and AED Course?

The CPR and AED course is the right choice if you want certified cardiac emergency readiness without committing to a full two-day first aid programme. It is the preferred option for:

If your employer or institution requires a full workplace first aid qualification, the Standard First Aid Course in Singapore covers CPR, AED, and the full range of emergency scenarios across two days. If you are unsure which course applies to your situation, our guide to types of first aid courses available in Singapore will help you decide.

  • Swim coaches, lifeguards, and aquatics professionals who need CPR+AED certification as a condition of employment or registration
  • Sports instructors, personal trainers, and fitness coaches whose facilities require current CPR+AED competency
  • Teachers and school staff who already hold a current SFA certificate and need a standalone CPR+AED renewal
  • Parents and caregivers who want to be genuinely prepared for a cardiac emergency at home or in public
  • Corporate employees whose companies require CPR+AED competency beyond what their SFA course covers
  • Anyone renewing a lapsed CPR+AED certification before it affects their professional standing

Is There a Free CPR and AED Course in Singapore?

The short answer is: a fully free, accredited CPR certification is not widely available.

There are occasional free CPR awareness workshops run by SCDF and community organisations. These sessions are valuable for building public awareness, but they are non-accredited and do not result in a formal certification. For roles in coaching, lifeguarding, teaching, or healthcare that require proof of CPR+AED competency, an accredited certification is what is needed, not a free workshop attendance.

NTUC union members may also be eligible to claim a portion of the fee under UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme). Contact JustSwim for the current out-of-pocket cost after subsidies are applied.

Renewing Your CPR and AED Certification

CPR and AED certification is valid for two years from the date of completion. Renewal is straightforward, provided you book before the expiry date on your current certificate.

JustSwim offers the CPR+AED course for certificate holders whose certification is approaching expiry. Do not wait until the week before your certificate expires. Intake slots, particularly for SkillsFuture-funded sessions, fill up. Book at least four to six weeks ahead of your expiry date to avoid a gap in your certification.

For questions about renewing your first aid or safety certifications more broadly, see our guide to SFA certification renewal in Singapore .

CPR, AED, and the Safety Certification Pathway

The CPR and AED course is a standalone qualification, but it also sits within a broader safety certification landscape. Understanding where it fits helps you decide whether it is the only course you need or the first of several.

CPR+AED as a component of SFA: The Standard First Aid (SFA) course includes CPR and AED training as part of its two-day curriculum. If you already hold a current SFA certificate, your CPR+AED competency is covered. If your SFA has lapsed, you can renew it at the SFA level rather than separately.

CPR+AED as a standalone for specific roles: For swim coaches, sports professionals, and community workers who do not need the full SFA qualification but do need certified cardiac emergency readiness, the CPR+AED course is the efficient, targeted option.

Moving to BCLS: For professionals in healthcare-adjacent settings who need clinical-level resuscitation protocols, the BCLS course in Singapore is the next tier above CPR+AED. BCLS is the qualification specified by nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, and healthcare employers when standard CPR+AED is not sufficient.
